Nonfiction Forms

Nonfiction Writing presents students with focused instruction on essential writing forms, including research reports and responses to literature. Students practice writing skills such as creating good leads and forming strong topic sentences.

Nonfiction Writing grade 5 provides 16 units of instruction and practice activities. Each unit focuses on a specific nonfiction writing form and includes guided lessons with accompanying student pages that target skills essential to that writing form. The units are grouped into three sections: expository, persuasive, and narrative writing.

Each unit prepares second-grade students to complete a text-dependent writing prompt with activities that include close reading, vocabulary, and text-dependent questions. Downloadable home–school connection activities help to extend learning at home.
