I like that this material is standard based and cross-curricular.

I use this product in my second grade class in Florida. It is perfect for teaching all types of writing. I love the various activities and how they are logically arranged. This book is a fabulous resource for me because we don't have an actual writing curriculum at my school and this gives me a model to follow

My students have difficulty with fact based writing.  Having something to read and reflect upon has help make them less anxious.  I would recommend purchasing at students' reading level NOT grade level.

This is exactly the product we teachers are looking forward to make our curriculum more rigorous and actively engage our students.

Just for I need for common core writing! Looking forward to using it all year.

I am very impressed with how thoughtfully this book is laid out. There are 12 units, divided evenly into two groups: informative/explanatory writing and opinion/argument writing.

Each unit includes 1) a useful overview of what to expect and a lesson checklist, 2) a useful vocabulary list to prepare the student for the text, 3) a two-page non-fiction essay on some interesting topic (my daughter likes the "Animals Helping Humans" and "The Chocolate Process" texts), 4) a list of questions about the text (some multiple-choice, some short-answer) to help the student process the facts found in the essay, 5) an activity helping the student either organize the information in the essay or to start formulating an argument and supporting points, 6) a prompt for the student to write his or her own expository essay or opinion, 7) and a method for the student to evaluate his or her original essay.

It's very methodical and detailed, which is exactly what my daughter needs. Everything is broken down into manageable chunks, and is designed to guide the student to understand the text well rather than just bumble through it, and to help the student produce a respectable, organized essay. The grade level also seems very appropriate for 9 year olds - challenging yet with significant guidance at every step.
