Evan-Moor Provides Fun, New Ways to Boost Vocabulary Skills for Kindergarten through Grade Six Students
New standards-based 'Take It to Your Seat Vocabulary Centers' facilitate individual, group, and one-on-one practice
MONTEREY, CALIF. (May 10, 2006) - Vocabulary is a key predictor of whether children will read -- and how well. From preschool through middle school, daily vocabulary building is essential for academic success. Studies show that practice activities should be enjoyable for the learner, connect a word's meaning to prior knowledge if possible, provide multiple exposures to a word, and develop critical learning skills over time.
From Evan-Moor Educational Publishers comes Take It to Your Seat Vocabulary Centers, with engaging activities and differentiated instruction for building a rich vocabulary. Designed for grades K–6 students, the new, cost-effective resource books are available in six grade-specific editions.
"Take It to Your Seat Vocabulary Centers motivate all children to practice essential reading and language-arts skills," said Evan-Moor CEO Bill Evans. "We've created a flexible practice series that is suitable for family, classroom, and after-school settings. The format encourages children to experiment with the various games, puzzles, and activity sheets—and find out what works best for them."
Working either individually or with a partner, students learn to make intelligent choices and set their own learning pace. English language learners benefit from the active learning approach, visual cues, and varied learning exercises that develop word mastery. Materials are correlated to state standards and are eligible for Reading First, Title II, 21st Century Learning Centers and Title V funding. Integrated themes and repetition help children retain what they have learned. By linking vocabulary from language arts, science, math, and social studies curricula, Vocabulary Centers help students carry over essential reading skills to other curriculum areas.
Evan-Moor Take It to Your Seat Learning Centers are easy to use for teacher aids and paraprofessionals in the classroom, and for families in a home environment. Each book contains step-by-step directions for creating and using the center and full-color materials to construct it; full-color student directions, task cards, puzzle pieces and game boards; reproducible student activity sheets, and lift-the-flap answer keys for self-checking the sheets.
Reading readiness is the focus of the Grades K–1 edition. Subsequent editions review previous concepts and introduce new skills for children to master. K–1 practice skills include recognizing color words, identifying rhymes, reading sight words, forming compounds, and matching action words. Practice skills in the Grades 1–2 edition include applying math symbols, reading sight words, recognizing opposites, and naming synonyms. In Grades 2–3 children learn to make analogies, apply prefixes and suffixes, and differentiate multiple meanings. Practice skills in Grades 3–4 include using geography compound words, recognizing weather terms, and recognizing slang. Grades 4–5 skills include recognizing science content words, naming geometric figures, and using computer compound words. The Grades 5–6 edition has practice in identifying literary and slang compounds, recognizing biomes, and reading French sayings.
The six grade-specific editions of Take It to Your Seat Vocabulary Centers retail for $24.99 each.
