Tomorrow's Technology for Today's Teachers

How Evan-Moor Educational Publishers, located in Monterey, CA, helps teachers meet 21st century educational challenges with 21st century educational technology.

MONTEREY, CALIF. (October 2, 2008) - In Osan, Korea, resource teacher Debby Moon carries a library of over 20 books with her wherever she goes—on a CD she easily slips in and out of her briefcase.

Students at Laurel Hill Elementary School in Fairfax County, Virginia, are practicing language arts skills just like the other students in their district, only they're doing it through a hands-on activity using an electronic whiteboard.

When Wendi Allen, a teacher in Ningo, China, needs extra support for a student who's falling behind, she knows exactly where to go—online, where she can search for, download, and print the activities she needs in just minutes.

All around the world, teachers and educators are looking to digital technology to provide the supplemental solutions they need to support students in the classroom. And Debby, Wendi, and many others like them, are finding those solutions with Evan-Moor Educational Publishers.

"Evan-Moor just keeps coming up with new and improved ways to provide materials for teachers -- materials that help students reach their potential in fun, educational ways," said Allen.

For 30 years, Evan-Moor has been meeting the growing demands of teachers by developing innovative educational materials and resources, including pioneer products in the field of educational technology.

As one of the first educational publishing companies to offer its materials as electronic downloadable e-books, Evan-Moor has become a leader in the education e-book industry. Over 450 titles are available for instant download on www.evan-moor.com, and on high-traffic sites such as ebooksforteachers.com Evan-Moor is at the top of the most popular publishers list.

"We live and work in a digital world," said Bills Evans, CEO and Co-founder of Evan-Moor, "and that doesn't change when we enter a classroom. I don't think for a moment that paper books are going away, but e-books offer additional teaching opportunities and a flexibility of use that help meet the needs of today's teachers."

Evan-Moor e-books are electronic versions of Evan-Moor titles in portable document format (PDF), which are accepted by free readers such as Adobe Reader or Preview. Teachers can download e-books immediately and back up the books on CD so they don't get lost or damaged. E-books save paper because teachers print only what they need, when they need it. They also save money by cutting out shipping costs, and, as Debby found out, the electronic format is perfect for teachers who need instant access to a variety of books and resources.

"I absolutely love e-books," said Moon. "I don't have to pack up all of my supplies and move them to a new classroom, because I have over 20 books on CD instead. I wish I could do that with every book I own."

E-books can also be projected onto any electronic whiteboard such as a SMARTboard or Activboard. Students like those in Fairfax County can practice editing skills by marking up passages on screen, take part in a lesson on the climatic regions of South America by coloring in sections of a map, or practice their handwriting by tracing letters in front of the class.

"There are a lot of possibilities with this new electronic medium," said Evans. "Moving forward, Evan-Moor will be looking into creating e-books that allow teacher's to customize content for their class, to add extra elements to an activity, or to make notes for an aide or substitute."

Such advances may seem like they're a long way off, but Evan-Moor has been turning possibilities into realities for some time now.

In 2006, Evan-Moor launched TeacherFileBox.com, a subscription-based print-on-demand library of over 40,000 supplemental learning activities from across the PreK–6th grade curriculum. As one of the first websites of its kind, TeacherFileBox.com has taken 30 years of Evan-Moor's quality, award-winning educational content and separated it into individual activities—organized and searchable by subject and grade level.

"I currently live in China and teach at an international school where it's difficult to obtain materials to enhance the lessons within our curriculum," said Wendi Allen, a teacher who uses TeacherFileBox.com nearly every single day. "However, I discovered TeacherFileBox.com and have been a subscriber ever since."

Almost two years after its launch, TeacherFileBox.com now has thousands of subscribers all over the world. And with new activities and features being added every day, subscribers like Wendi are finding more and more to be gained from their online experience.

"I would spend hundreds of dollars to have all the materials that are available to me with just a click of the mouse," says Stacie Perez-Fonseca, an elementary school teacher from Louisville, KY. "It is fantastic to have access any time of the day or night. Planning can happen anywhere with ease of access like this."

As teachers everywhere find themselves facing new 21st century challenges, Evan-Moor continues to look to digital content and the web as a way to support teachers and educators all around the world.

"As the world of education evolves and teachers' demands for more innovative and flexible materials increase, Evan-Moor will be here to help," said Evans. "It is our goal to create educational materials and resources that not only build and reinforce skills, but that reinforce children's natural curiosity about their world—materials that help children learn. And, just as importantly, materials that help children love learning."
