New Evan-Moor Math Assessment Tool Evaluates Fundamental Math Skills

Teachers and paraprofessionals use cost effective materials to assess student math performance in pre-K through second grade classrooms.

MONTEREY, CALIF. (May 12, 2006) - The goal of No Child Left Behind legislation is for every student to achieve math proficiency by 2014. Study after study shows that early intervention helps children meet grade-level standards. Although skills testing is not mandatory until grade 3, pre-kindergarten through grade 2 assessments help teachers tailor instruction to each student's skill level. At-risk children who receive high-quality education early on are more apt to enter kindergarten with age-appropriate skills.

Math Assessment Tasks -- Quick Check Activities, a new series of cost-effective assessment tools from Evan-Moor Educational Publishers, gives pre-kindergarten-through-grade 2 teachers a quick and easy way to monitor individual student progress. Designed with the busy teacher in mind, the assessments may be administered by a teacher, paraprofessional, volunteer parent or teacher's aide.

"Young children thrive on personal attention and individualized instruction," said Evan-Moor CEO Bill Evans. "By evaluating standards-based math skills early and often, the teacher can pinpoint a child's strengths and weaknesses and provide additional practice for students who need it."

Math Assessment Tasks -- Quick Check Activities is a performance-based tool containing tasks that are correlated with specific grade-level state math standards. Scripted instruction for teachers and classroom assistants simplifies the assessment process. Colorful task cards and mats motivate students to perform.

The math assessment series consists of one book per grade level for Pre-K, kindergarten, grade 1 and grade 2 classrooms. To streamline assessment, record keeping and follow-up practice, each book is broken down into 18 or more convenient units. A unit contains all the necessary materials for assessing an individual skill, including easy-to-follow scripted instructions for administering the assessment task, full-color materials children use to complete the task, checklists for recording overall classroom progress and that of individual students, and reproducible follow-up practice activities.

Each assessment task is correlated to a specific grade-level standard. Fundamental math skills are divided into five sections: number sense; algebra and functions; measurement and geometry; statistics, data analysis and probability; and mathematical reasoning.

Math Assessment Tasks, Pre-K -- Quick Check Activities includes assessment of number sense skills such as counting by rote to 20 and demonstrating one to one correspondence; statistics, data analysis and probability skills such as creating patterns; and measurement and geometry skills such as recognizing and naming common shapes.

Kindergarten assessment tasks include number sense skills such as rote counting to 30 or more; algebraic skills such as sorting and classifying by attributes; and measurement and geometry skills such as comparing objects by length and weight.

Grade 1 tasks include number sense skills such as rote counting to 100; measurement and geometry skills such as telling time to the nearest half-hour; statistics, data analysis and probability skills such as reading and analyzing data on a bar graph; and algebraic skills such as identifying the missing number in addition and subtraction facts.

Grade 2 tasks include number sense skills such as reading numbers to 1,000 and identifying place value for each digit to 1,000; measurement and geometry skills such as telling time to the nearest quarter hour; and algebraic skills such as problem solving and justifying the reasoning used to solve the problem.

Each grade-specific edition of Math Assessment Tasks -- Quick Check Activities consists of 176 pages, retails for $24.99.
