New Evan-Moor 'Building Fluency Series Focuses on Essential Reading Component
Comprehensive fluency-building programs for K-6 classrooms include engaging content and easy-to-use assessment tools
MONTEREY, CALIF. (June 1, 2006) - Reading fluency, an essential ingredient for academic success, bridges the gap between word recognition and reading comprehension. On standardized tests, students who score low on fluency also score low on comprehension. Fluency is the ability to read text with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Fluent readers recognize words automatically and do not struggle with decoding, so they can focus on the meaning of what they read.
Building Fluency, a new series of teaching and assessment tools from Evan-Moor Educational Publishers, gives K–6 teachers an all-in-one teaching and assessment package to help struggling readers practice oral fluency. The six editions, one for each grade, are aligned with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Standard 2. This standard requires students to read from a wide range of literature from many periods and in many genres to build an understanding of human experience.
"The No Child Left Behind Act identified oral fluency as one of the five essential components of effective reading programs," said Evan-Moor CEO Bill Evans. "Many children require explicit fluency practice that is daily and ongoing. Building Fluency captures their interest with fun selections they will want to hear and read aloud again and again."
Designed for classroom, resource, and special needs teachers, Building Fluency is eligible for Title I, Reading First, 21st Century Learning Centers, and Title V funds. The forward, by nationally recognized reading expert Dr. Gerald Tindal, underscores the importance of systematically building fluency. In Building Fluency, a table of oral reading fluency norms, ready-to-use assessment selections, data charts, and a tracking sheet for recording students' proficiency puts assessment at the instructor's fingertips.
Reading selections were chosen for their engaging quality, rich language, humor, and cultural literacy values. Genres include poetry, fiction and nonfiction, readers' theater, speeches, and jokes.
Each grade-specific edition contains 80 pages plus 20 transparencies that cover a wide range of genres. The retail price of Building Fluency is $29.99.
